What is IASTM?

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation – it’s the use of ergonomically designed stainless steel instruments directly on the body to increase functional mobility, strength and healing, and reduce pain.  Used with lubricating waxes, the edges of the tools glide across the tissue to break down adhesions, release fascial restrictions and provoke a healing inflammatory response.

Restrictions can be caused by injury, post-surgery, or overuse - think running, throwing, repetitive occupational motions, poor posture or underlying biomechanical issues.  Studies have shown IASTM to be effective in the treatment of chronic adhesions and scar tissue as well as acute issues.

How Will It Help Me?

The mechanical and neuromuscular benefits of this treatment have been shown to include:

  • Release of myofascial restriction & trigger points

  • Interruption of pain receptors

  • Improved blood flow & oxygenation of tissues

  • Improved range of motion & flexibility of muscles/ligaments/tendons

  • Mobilization of the soft tissue

  • Loosening of adhesions in connective tissue.

  • Faster rehabilitation/recovery

  • Reduction in need for anti-inflammatory medication

What is Kinesiology Taping?

Developed in Japan over 40 years ago, Kinesiology taping involves the application of pre-stretched,  dynamically elastic adhesive tapes over and around muscles in order to either give functional assistance and support – and therefore improved range of motion – or to prevent overuse and over-contraction, and aid lymphatic flow and circulation.

The hypoallergenic, latex-free tape mimics the physical qualities of the skin in its weight, thickness and elasticity, and microscopically lifts the skin away from the fascia and muscle below as it recoils back to its unstretched length after application. It decompresses tissues, and provides mechanical and neuromuscular benefits.

How Will It Help Me?

Like the other manual therapies we offer at GFC, taping helps to facilitate your body’s own healing processes, while providing support and stability.

It’s uses and benefits include:

  • Prevention and treatment of sporting injuries

  • Alleviation of muscle fatigue & pain

  • Enhanced lymphatic drainage & blood flow

  • Reduction of oedema

  • Enhanced healing of soft tissues

  • Improved muscle function & range of motion

  • Improved joint stability

  • Enhanced proprioception

For maximum results, we recommend combining the manual therapies on offer at GFC in order to reach your rehabilitation and performance goals faster - that's why our IASTM & Taping Treatments are offered under one treatment appointment.

Our Sports Podiatrist will work with you on designing a tailored holistic treatment plan to help get you fitter, stronger and faster as soon as possible - and keep you that way.

At GFC we advise that IASTM & Taping treatments are utilised as part of an integrated treatment/rehabilitation plan.  If you have not yet had a Biomechanical Assessment, or been referred for IASTM by another practitioner in the clinic, please contact us for further advice on assessment/booking.  Please wear or bring shorts/leggings to change into for your treatment.

We only use 100% natural Songbird beeswax or vegan massage waxes, in a blend chosen to therapeutically enhance your treatment.  Tenderness, muscle fatigue or soreness and some bruising is normal after IASTM treatment, but the symptoms generally subside within 2 - 3 days,  We recommend avoiding strenuous or high impact activities for 24 hours following IASTM, to allow the body time to recover and to maximise the benefits of the treatment.
